Brandon Nimmo makes catch in stands, shakes hands with fan in wholesome Mets moment

At first, Brandon Nimmo had some competition with a fan for catching Fernando Tatis Jr.’s foul ball down the left-field line.And after Nimmo made the catch for the first out of the top of the fourth inning, he shook hands with that fan wearing an orange “Los Mets” T-shirt — after they appeared to have stumbled over. Nimmo checked to make sure the fan was OK, received a couple of pats on the back of his City Connect jersey and then held out his glove to show the nearest umpire that he had, in fact, snagged the ball.“That’s teamwork right there,” Mets play-by-play broadcaster Gary Cohen said on the PIX11 broadcast.The catch helped Mets starter Jose Quintana avoid having to toss another pitch to Tatis, who ripped a double — 100.3 mph off the bat, according to Baseball Savant — in the first inning of Saturday’s game, which the Mets led 3-0 through four innings. Quintana walked Jurickson Profar, but he then retired the next two Padres to make it through four innings unscathed with just one hit and the Profar walk allowed.Nimmo, in the bottom of the frame, then drove in the Mets’ first run Saturday with a double into the right-centerfield gap, scoring shortstop Francisco Lindor after his double in the previous at-bat. It gave Nimmo hits in eight of his past 10 games and helped the outfielder work toward snapping a lengthy slump that saw his average drop to as low as .209 near the end of May and led to him undergoing concussion tests when that rough stretch coincided with the aftermath of getting hit in the head with a pitch. “I’ve undergone tests and we are going to do more, just because Mendy dealt with that last year and he understands,” Nimmo told The Post’s Peter Botte on Friday.“So there will be more tests.
