Phillies manager Rob Thomson goes ballistic on umpire in wild ejection

Phillies manager Rob Thomson really let umpire Mike Estabrook have it Sunday. The Phillies skipper was tossed from a game against the Orioles at Camden Park in the top of the sixth inning after Estabrook reversed a call that was initially ruled a hit by pitch for Garrett Stubbs, who was hit on the foot and sent to first base. Estabrook eventually called Stubbs back to the plate after discussing the situation with his fellow umps and an angry Thomson came out to find out what had happened. The conversation quickly devolved as Thomson, already upset over the way the strike zone had been called Sunday, became angrier and angrier with each passing breath until the Phillies manager was in the face of the Estabrook — who tossed him.That only fired up Thomson more, and enflaming the situation was Estabrook, who got right into the face of Thomson to yell right back at him. The animated conversation continued briefly before Laz Diaz eventually got in between the two and walked Thomson back to the Phillies dugout. The play did eventually go to replay review, and it was ultimately ruled that Stubbs should continue the at-bat. Orioles pitcher Corbin Burnes was able to get Stubbs to fly out to center field on the next pitch. Baltimore took the game, 8-3, to close out the three-game set, and it was the Phillies’ fourth loss in their last six games. Sunday’s game was not the first time that a member of the Phillies had gotten tossed by Estabrook. Last year, in a game against the Mets, Estabrook tossed Bryce Harper after he yelled an expletive as he was walking to the dugout following a strikeout. The Phillies had been ahead in that June 23, 2023 game 5-1 at the time when Harper was ejected in the bottom of the seventh inning....
