Panthers coach Dave Canales already answering questions about benching Bryce Young

Panthers quarterback Bryce Young was the worst quarterback in the NFL in Week 1, according to Pro Football Focus, and first-year head coach Dave Canales is already being asked whether it is time to move on from the 2023 No.1 pick.

Young, who was 13-for-30 for 161 yards, no passing touchdowns and two interceptions, received a grade of 32.6 per PFF as the Panthers were bludgeoned by the Saints, 47-10.“The best experience you can have is to be on the field and to just live it,” Canales said.

“He’s got 16 games from last year.He’s got another one under his belt.

So, we just keep building on experience … there’s no way to replace that.” Canales was brought in from Tampa Bay to help develop Young but there didn’t appear to be much improvement against their NFC South rivals.During training camp, Canales had said he saw plenty of development from Young.

“Just the focus and growth of Bryce in terms of his owning the concepts and the timing and rhythm of it,” Canales said during training camp, via WCC Charlotte.“It has been showing up all camp … So it’s something our (receivers) can learn to count on — work for him, and he will find you.”That did not translate into the regular season, though, as Young looked awfully like the quarterback who was a massive disappointment in his rookie season after starring at Alabama.NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay is even starting to feel bad for Young, whom he ranked as the No.
