Jeff McNeils Mets injury rehab could take him to Arizona Fall League

The Mets’ search for rehab games for Jeff McNeil could lead to Arizona.With Hurricane Milton bearing down on Florida — the Mets minor league facility is located in Port St.Lucie — manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that the team may petition MLB to ask permission for McNeil to play games in the Arizona Fall League.McNeil, who is rehabbing from a right wrist fracture, worked out at Citi Field with teammates before the Mets’ 7-2 Game 3 NLDS win over the Phillies, but team officials would like him to play in games — standing on his feet for a stretch of innings — before any potential activation from the injured list.That activation could occur as soon as the NLCS should the Mets advance.Mendoza cited Kyle Schwarber playing games in the Arizona Fall League before joining the Cubs’ World Series roster in 2016 after missing most of the season with an injury as a precedent.Among the decisions facing Mendoza is which pitcher might piggyback Kodai Senga in a potential Game 5 on Friday.

The manager will have Luis Severino on full rest that day, but David Peterson also pitched well in that role on Saturday in Senga’s return from the injured list.Follow The Post’s coverage of the Mets in the postseason:Mendoza has received no shortage of well-wishes this offseason as the Mets have progressed in October.But Mendoza was hard-pressed to say from who he might have received the most surprising text.“It’s hard for me to sit here and say a name because it’s like 400, 500 text messages — it’s unbelievable,” Mendoza said.
