Over 10 tourists trapped in Colorado coal mine after equipment malfunction

Rescue efforts are underway after more than 10 people became trapped inside a Colorado coal mine they were touring Thursday, according to officials and reports.The group is stuck about 1,000 feet down in the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, which offers tours to the public, following an “equipment malfunction,” the Teller County Sheriff’s Office said.The mine did not collapse, the office added.Colorado Springs firefighters are working to rescue the more than 10 people still inside, while 11 people were already saved, ABC Denver reported.The gold mine located in Cripple Creek, about 20 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, closed operations in the 1960s but remains open as a tourist attraction.Colorado Gov.Jared Polis said the state is sending resources to help the local teams bring the people to safety.“We will do everything possible and assist the county to ensure a speedy and safe resolution of the situation,” he said in a statement.This is a developing story.
