State elections officials were forced to step in to avert a near-disaster that could have led to thousands of voters being turned away at the polls in a key congressional district.Nine staffers had to be dispatched from Albany this week to help alleviate a backlog of nearly 20,000 voter registration forms and other paperwork in Onondaga County, with the state Board of Elections calling the matter a “grave concern.” It marked the first time the state had to provide direct last-minute support to a county elections board.The county is at the center of the battleground 22nd Congressional District race, pitting incumbent GOP Rep.Brandon Williams (R-NY) against Democratic state Senator John Mannion.“With the assistance of the State Board of Elections, the backlog was resolved late yesterday.
