Last month, Ethel Cain announced her new project Perverts, the highly anticipated follow-up to her massive 2022 debut Preacher’s Daughter. Now, she’s unveiling the lead single “Punish.” “I wonder how deep shame can run, and how unforgivable an act could be that I may still justify it in some bent way to make carrying it more bearable,” Cain says in the press release.
“Would I tell myself it’s not my fault and I couldn’t help myself? Would anyone truly believe that? Would I?” Cain clarifies that Perverts is not an album, though it is 90 minutes. It explores the droning ambient sound that gave Preacher’s Daughter a captivatingly disturbing edge.
She wrote, produced, and recorded it between Coraopolis, PA and Tallahassee, FL over the past year. Here’s what she said about it: Watch the “Punish” video below, directed by Cain and Silken Weinberg.
