Jets kicking carousel takes wild twist after Harrison Butkers Chiefs injury

No sooner had the Jets finished singing Spencer Shrader’s praises than he was gone from their roster.The kicker carousel — which will bring the Jets to their fourth kicker in the last four games come Sunday — took its wildest spin yet Thursday when the Chiefs signed Shrader off of the Jets practice squad in news that became public at 4:32 p.m.About 25 minutes earlier, special teams coordinator Brant Boyer spoke about how Shrader made both of his field-goal attempts in his Jets’ debut as a game-day roster elevation.“Kid’s got a lot of talent,” Boyer said.“I think he handled it well, doing what we asked him to do and syncing up with those guys and doing a good job in the game.”The Jets offered Shrader a spot on their 53-man roster to fend off the Chiefs’ interest, as first reported by ESPN and confirmed by The Post, but Shrader instead chose to join the undefeated two-time defending Super Bowl champions as a fill-in for the injured Harrison Butker.So, the Jets will turn to another practice-squad elevation: Anders Carlson, who went 5-for-5 on field goals for the 49ers earlier this season.

Carlson was a sixth-round pick of the Packers in 2023 but was cut after one shaky season.The Jets put formerly reliable veteran Greg Zuerlein on injured reserve after he converted just 9-of-15 field goals through eight games and pivoted to Riley Patterson.Patterson made 3 of 3 PATs but still was cut last week to make way for Carlson as competition for Shrader. “We are just trying to find the best guy,” Boyer said.
