The body of an elderly man was found face down inside the polluted Gowanus Canal Thursday afternoon, according to police.The man, 69, was discovered in the water around 2 p.m.
near Nevins and Butler streets in Brooklyn, authorities said.He was pronounced dead at the scene.Disturbing images from the scene show the man’s fully clothed body face down on a row of rocks in the canal — a designated Superfund site and one of the most heavily contaminated waterways in the country — before the remains were retrieved by officers.The medical examiner’s office will determine the manner and cause of death before the NYPD knows if foul play was suspected.
