A shirtless man was shot and killed by cops after he burst into an Illinois senior living facility and started threatening its elderly residents with a chainsaw, according to authorities. In scenes similar to a horror movie, the so-far unidentified man was first seen around 8:45 a.m.trying to cut down a tree outside the River Glen of St.
Charles, an assistant-living facility about an hour west of Chicago, the St.Charles Police Department said.
“Just before police arrival, witnesses advised the subject had now gained entry to the lobby of the building and began confronting residents with the chainsaw,” the department said.Officers attempted to “de-escalate the situation,” but “the suspect continued his attempts to use the chainsaw against residents of the building and the officers,” police said.
Cops attempted to tase the shirtless man, “but his attack continued,” the department said.“An Officer was then forced to fire his service weapon, striking the suspect,” who was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, the statement said.No details were given on the suspect, including his age or if he had any connection to the center.Several residents of the assisted-living facility and several officers were also treated at the scene for minor injuries, according to police.“We are deeply grateful for the swift action of our team and law enforcement,” the River Glen of St.
Charles said in a statement.“We want to emphasize that our community is secure, and all residents and staff members are safe.”Illinois State Police are investigating the incident.
