Exclusive | Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips calls Original Sin a family show for a serial killer

“Dexter: Original Sin” is, as the title says, the origin story of blood splatter expert and serial killer Dexter Morgan.Clyde Phillips, the showrunner on the first series, is again directing this 10-part series.This iteration stars Irish actor Patrick Gibson as a young Dexter, a college student and budding killer mentored by his dad (Christian Slater).The first series, which ran from 2006 to 2013, starred Michael C.Hall as a Miami-based blood splatter expert who moonlighted as a killer offing people he felt deserved to die.Phillips, 66, who spoke to The Post at the show’s premiere on Wednesday night in New York, lovingly calls the new iteration a “family show for a serial killer,” noting that “there’s a lot of father-son stuff going on here.”Dexter also has a sister (played by Molly Brown), and “they’re mourning the loss of their mother.”“It’s a very humane show, and he’s a serial killer,” Phillips adds.However, the Emmy nominee told The Post that he does not have a fondness for serial killers.“I hate serial killers,” he explains.

“But I love this serial killer because he kills for good and he kills people who have fallen through the cracks and arguably deserve to die.Each time he takes that person out he’s stopping them from killing other people, thereby saving hundreds and maybe thousands of lives.“That person is no longer in business because Dexter took them out of business.”Phillips is excited for fans to see the new show because it’s an “opportunity for the audience to see the formation.”He notes that when we first met Dexter, “he was 35 years old, he was fully formed, he was living with a woman and now we meet him as a college student who has never kissed a girl and doesn’t know how to hug his own sister, so it’s a lot about family.”Fans will also be happy to know that Hall is back, albeit not on screen, as he narrates the 10-episode series.“He’s an executive producer of the show,” Phillips shares...
