Mets take a chance on outfielder-turned-pitcher Anthony Gose

The Mets added a few more fliers, including a former top-prospect outfielder who is now a pitcher. Intriguing lefty Anthony Gose, recovering righty Oliver Ortega and catcher Chris Williams have been signed to minor league contracts and will be in Mets major league spring training. Gose, 34, was a hyped outfield prospect with the Phillies, Blue Jays and Tigers and played in 342 major league games before switching to pitching in 2017.Gose has appeared in 31 games with a 4.78 ERA with Cleveland since debuting as a bullpen lefty in 2021.

He primarily pitched in Triple-A last season, when he owned a 3.22 ERA and struck out 59 in 44 ²/₃ innings. Ortega, 28, pitched in 45 games with the Angels and Twins from 2021-23 but missed all of last season due to a pair of surgeries, the second to remove bone spurs from his right elbow. Williams, 28, has played six minor league seasons and is awaiting his MLB debut.Last year he hit 17 home runs and batted .221 with an .800 OPS in 88 games with the Twins’ Triple-A affiliate....
