Dog rescued after falling through ice on NJ lake

It was a real miracle on ice for the holidays.An adorable pet dog was heroically rescued by volunteer firefighters after it fell into a frozen lake in New Jersey.After falling through the ice at Shadow Lake in Franklin Lakes on Sunday, the pup managed to swim to a small island about 75 feet from the shore, where it remained trapped, the Franklin Lakes Fire Department wrote on Facebook.Rescue crews then donned specialized ice rescue gear and used a canoe belonging to a nearby homeowner to reach the stranded dog.

“With some teamwork — and a few treats to win the dog’s trust — Firefighters Jost and Chazen were able to leash the pup and bring him safely back to shore,” the department said.Adorable photos from the rescue show the brown-and-white Boxer-like dog in the back of the canoe as a rescuer laid on the ice to push it along the frozen lake as others pulled a rope attached to the front.The department was also aided by the Franklin Lakes Police Department and the Franklin Lakes Volunteer Ambulance Corps, who helped provide rehab for the crews.

“Another successful rescue showing the strength of teamwork and dedication of our Volunteers!” the department added.The dog nor its owner was identified, and it was not immediately clear how it first fell....
