The Big Apple’s going to freeze. The city will be hit by a bone-chilling cold stretch over the weekend followed by possible snow Monday morning, meteorologists said Friday.Flurries are forecast to begin falling in all five boroughs — and most of the tri-state area — as early as Sunday night, said FOX Weather Meteorologist Cody Braud.“We’re calling for snow showers but keep a close eye to see if it changes, especially as you head to work Monday,” Braud said.“Denser snow could impede travel.”Up to 3 or 4 inches of powder could pile up throughout the day Monday, depending on how the mid-Atlantic storm forms and moves, he said.Over the weekend, the city will be struck by frigid morning temperatures in the high 20s.“The air will be bitterly cold.
What’s going to catch people’s attention is the duration,” Braud said — adding the city has suffered through icy mornings for roughly two weeks.“Before that, we hadn’t seen a stretch of days where we wake up and it’s in the 20s for quite a while.”On Saturday, temperatures will drop to a partly sunny low of 29 degrees with a high of 36 degrees. It will be even colder on Sunday with a low of 27 degrees and a high of 38 degrees.By contrast, the coldest temperature ever recorded in the Big Apple on Jan.4 was -3 degrees in 1918 and the lowest temp ever on Jan.
5 was -4 degrees in 1904.The city will likely “at least see flurries” Monday but there’s a chance the storm could evolve or change directions, Braud said.“The storm is just now forming in the Midwest and as it takes shape we can predict more,” Braud said Friday.“The snow is not a slam dunk yet.”The average snowfall in January in the Big Apple is 8.7 inches.
