NFL teams weighing Mike Tomlin pursuit as Steelers limp into playoffs

Rumors surrounding Mike Tomlin’s future with the Steelers have picked up once again.After uncertainty last year over whether the longtime coach would return to Pittsburgh, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on “Sunday NFL Countdown” that some NFL teams are wondering whether they should ask the Steelers if they would move on from Tomlin.Schefter added he doesn’t think the Steelers will move on from Tomlin, who won a Super Bowl in his second year at the helm.Tomlin is in his 18th season as the Steelers head coach and has never had a losing record.But given how the Steelers are limping into the playoffs coming off of four straight losses, teams appear to be curious about the 52-year-old’s potential availability.Speculation ran rampant after the team’s wild-card loss to the Bills last year about whether Tomlin’s time with the Steelers was up as he had just one year remaining on his contract.But Tomlin decided to return and in June, received a three-year extension through 2027.While the Steelers are consistently competitive under Tomlin, they haven’t won a playoff game since eight years ago, when they reached the AFC Championship game.They have struggled to find a successor to longtime quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, having moved on from 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett after just two years.Pittsburgh brought in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields last offseason, with Fields leading the team to a 4-2 start before Wilson, who recovered from a calf injury, took over.Wilson, 36, won six of his first seven starts, which included wins over the playoff-bound Ravens and Commanders, but also included victories against the hapless Giants and Jets, and two over the woeful Browns.After sitting at 10-3, Wilson and the Steelers then lost four straight to the Eagles, Ravens, Chiefs and Bengals, failing to score more than 17 points in any of those games....
