A first-time mom practiced postpartum confinement and didn’t leave the house for 30 days.Amy Nguyen, 30, began her confinement period the day after she gave birth and had a nanny move in with her and husband Mike Nguyen, 29.Postpartum confinement is a tradition that originated in China, where the mum spends 30 days resting and recovering after giving birth.Amy only left the house to go to doctor appointments and had the nanny to cook all her meals.Amy says she now feels “well-recovered from giving birth” and that the confinement and “served its purpose.”Amy, a public health manager in Sacramento, California, said: “It’s been a great experience as a whole.“It was definitely a bit tough at the start as all three adults were getting used to living in the same space.“But once we got a good system down, it’s been smooth sailing since then.”Amy gave birth to her first child Tommy Zhang just over a month ago on November 7.She and her husband Mike went home the day after the birth and Amy began the confinement straight away.Throughout the confinement, Amy had a nanny who cooked all of her meals and helped her looking after her newborn.Amy said: “My mom helped me find a nanny on the Chinese social media app, MiChat.“Once we had found her online, my husband and I met her for lunch almost as an informal interview to see if we all clicked.“It all went well so we went ahead and hired her for 26 days, so she was staying with us for 30 days, but with a four-day break in the middle.“The nanny has cooked all of my meals over the month and was constantly telling me to get back into bed and will take care of Tommy with me.”Amy put a modern spin on the traditional post-birth confinement by continuing to shower, but rinsing herself with warm ginger herbal water afterwards.Amy said “In traditional confinements you’re not meant to shower as you will be cold when you get out.“I got around this by rinsing myself with warm herbal water as soon as I left ...
