Donte DiVincenzo sidelined indefinitely in Timberwolves injury blow after turnaround

Just as Donte DiVincenzo was heating up, the injury bug bites. The Minnesota Timberwolves guard is out indefinitely due to a left big toe injury he sustained on Jan.15 against Golden State, ESPN reported Monday.DiVincenzo, whose foot has been placed in a boot, will receive additional opinions on treatment options in the coming days. MRI scans revealed DiVincenzo’s injury is a “Grade 3 left great toe sprain,” and “further updates of his progress will be provided when available,” the Timberwolves said Monday in a statement. In his first season with the Timberwolves, the Delaware native is averaging 11 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game.

A usually clinical three-point shooter, DiVincenzo has been averaging seven attempts from behind the arc per game but converting just .369 percent of them. Those marks represent a noticeable decline from where the sharpshooter was a year earlier.During his sole campaign with the Knicks in 2023-24, DiVincenzo posted his best statistical season to date, including 15 points per game on .401 percent shooting from three. His 8.7 attempted three-pointers per game also represented a career-high.As of late, though, it seemed DiVincenzo had been turning a corner with his new team.In Minnesota’s previous six contests, he was averaging 17.5 points and 4.7 assists per game on 42 percent shooting from behind the arc.DiVincenzo was sidelined last Friday when the Timberwolves visited the Knicks.Even without the former Villanova product in the lineup, Minnesota won that contest handily behind a 36-point effort from Anthony Edwards.Julius Randle, also part of the DiVincenzo package that went to Minnesota in September when the Knicks acquired Karl-Anthony Towns, added eight points, seven rebounds and six assists in the contest. Minnesota is currently 22-20 overall — good for eighth place in the Western Conference. The Timberwolves’ next contest is Monday afternoon in Memphis.

Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.ET....
