Liza Minnelli’s biggest regret in life was not becoming a mother — despite trying desperately hard to have children, her longtime pal has revealed.The actress, who has received an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony Award during her glittering career, had suffered three miscarriages earlier in life.In Bruce David Klein’s new documentary, “Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story,” Minnelli’s friend of 50 years, Allan Lazare, revealed her “disappointment” at not having children.“We have been with Liza through all her emotional setbacks, like miscarriages,” said Lazare, who died in February 2024.“If she had to pick one thing that she’s disappointed in her life and that’s not being a mother,” he went on.
“She would have been a great mother.She has so much to give.
She’s been so wonderful with our children.”In the documentary, a throwback interview clip from 1980 played, in which Minnelli said, “I desperately want a family.I really want a family.”After the clip, the documentary reminded viewers that the daughter of Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli suffered several pregnancy losses during her life, which saw her tie the knot and get divorced four times.Speaking to The Guardian in 2008, Minnelli revealed, “I have a hiatal hernia, which I got when I was pregnant and they put me upside down trying to hold the baby — and the baby passed away anyway.”“But I got a hernia, so if I eat and sing like that, and all that muscle, it hurts.”Minnelli once told SAGA that her inability to have children is her life’s “true regrets.”While she doesn’t have children of her own, Minnelli does boast many godchildren, nephews, and nieces.In the documentary, Lazare says, “She would have made an incredible mother, and life wasn’t perfect.
But she moved on, and she’s become part of our family.I think that’s part of our attraction for her.
