An upstate school-bus driver pulled into a gun shop and bought a rifle while on duty — then brought the weapon along for the ride as he drove around a busload of kids, state police say.David Ferry, 57, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds Monday and later lost his job for the gun-toting stunt, troopers said in a press release. The cops’ investigation into the troubling incident began when Ferry was allegedly seen driving the bus away from a gun shop.“Troopers received a complaint-in-progress that Ferry had just purchased a .22 caliber rifle and was observed driving away in a Naples school bus upon leaving the retail store,” the release said“Ontario County Sheriff’s Office Deputies found the bus on State Route 247 in the town of Gorham and conducted a traffic stop upon request of the state police.
Deputies and troopers discovered the bus was occupied by 12 students.”Police said the gun was not loaded and do not believe Ferry intended to use it at any school-related event.“There is no indication that Ferry purchased the rifle with the intent of carrying out school violence, and there are no credible threats to Naples Central School, its students, or staff,” the release said. But officials at the Naples School District didn’t take the incident lightly.“At this time, the employee involved is no longer employed by the Naples Central School District,” the district said in a post on Facebook.
Ferry was released and is due back in court Feb.18....
