NYC braces for snow, sleet as weekend winter storm eyes the Northeast

Just as one winter storm that brought snow and ice exits the Northeast, a new winter storm is expected to slam similar areas over the weekend.New winter weather alerts have already been posted for cities that stretch from the eastern Rockies and Dakotas to New York City and even Boston.The FOX Forecast Center expects heavy snowfall will occur on Saturday across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes.

Temperatures are expected to be in the teens as the heavy snow falls, leading to very light, powdery snow prone to blowing and drifting. The combination of the cold air and moisture could mean some locales such as Minneapolis, Minn., Milwaukee, Wis., and Detroit, Mich., could experience their biggest snowstorm of the winter so far.The outer periphery of the storm system will reach the Northeast on Saturday night and produce another round of snow, sleet and freezing rain.The FOX Forecast Center said that, much like the first storm, Pennsylvania appears to be in the bull’s-eye once again for highly impactful ice.Across New England, heavy snow will fall through the first half of Sunday.There is a high probability of more than 6 inches for areas generally north and northeast of New York City.South of Interstate 70, rain is likely across the Ohio Valley and central Appalachians.

Potentially heavy amounts will be most concerning in the central Appalachians, where soils are already wet and ample rainfall is expected in the short term, the FOX Forecast Center said....
