Mike Woodsons underwhelming Indiana stint coming to a close

The product has not matched the price tag with Indiana head coach Mike Woodson and his squad over the past four years — now the program plans to move in a different direction.With some of the highest NIL spending in the Big Ten and the entire country, the Hoosiers have not made it past the round of 32 under Woodson, and failed to even make the NCAA Tournament a season ago.And now having lost six of its last seven games, Indiana looks to be trending toward missing the tournament once again. “[Woodson] and the Hoosiers are in discussions about the coach’s wishes to step away after this season,” ESPN reported.

“The details of the exit are being discussed.” After finishing 19-14 last season and missing March Madness in an underwhelming performance, Woodson brought in six transfers, four of which rated four-stars and coming from other high-major programs, and a four-star freshman, the expectations were back to sky-high.But the Hoosiers have won just two games in the last month, sit at 5-7 in Big Ten play and the fans are more irritated than ever; even chanting, “Fire Woodson” during home games at the famed Assembly Hall.The 66-year-old is a former Hoosier himself, having starred under the legendary Bob Knight from 1976 to 1980.Woodson averaged 19.8 points per game in his collegiate career before being selected 12th overall by the Knicks in the 1980 NBA Draft.Woodson was notably the head coach of the Knicks from 2011 to 2014 and, after a stint with the Los Angeles Clippers, was back with New York as an assistant coach for his final stop before taking the Indiana job in 2021.

The Hoosiers brought him in with no college coaching experience.“While the financial terms of Woodson’s exit are not clear, his contract calls for him to be paid more than $8 million if he’s fired,” ESPN reported.Thought to bring back the winning ways of the Bobby Knight glory days, the Woodson era fell flat....
