This dog’s a glory hound. The pups had their day at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night at the 149th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show final — where the coveted Best in Show was decided Tuesday night. This year’s competition was loaded with seven highly presentable pups representing their breed groups — all putting their best paw forward in this historic competition — but only one came away the top dog: Monty the Giant Schnauzer. This was Monty’s third time in a row representing the Working Group. The stunning and strong bearded black dog hails from New Jersey. This was the first win for the Working Group since 2004, ending the longest drought for any group in the famed competition.Runner-up for the third time was Bourbon the Whippet representing the Hound Group — her third time as runner-up at the competition.
The 9-and-a-half-year-old came out of retirement just days before barks went live at MSG this week.Other finalists were Neal the Bichon Frise, representing the Non-Sporting Group, Mercedes the German shepherd from the Herding Group, Comet the Shih Tzu from the Toy Group, and Freddie the English Springer Spaniel repping the Sporting Group. The finals were overseen by Judge Paula Nykiel, who said that picking the best of the best is a “wonderful” but “difficult” responsibility. This was her ninth judging assignment at Westminster and the veteran won Judge of the Year in 2023.This year was the triumphant return of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show to MSG since it was relocated out of the city after the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a breaking story.
