This historic North Carolina mill village starred in The Hunger Games and has listed for sale

The historic North Carolina mill village cast as District 12 in “The Hunger Games” is up for grabs. The rural village reached audiences worldwide when it served as the heroine Katniss Everdeen’s (Jennifer Lawrence) hometown, District 12, in the 2012 blockbuster film.Director Gary Ross used the its wooded hills and abandoned homes as a compelling backdrop to Everdeen’s impoverished, post-apocalyptic mining town on the fringes of society.In reality, it’s a lush piece of land called Henry River Mill Village, and it hosts daily tours as well as two Airbnbs. Henry River Mill Village’s portrayal of a company town wasn’t far from the truth, though.

The idyllic, rural property, founded in 1905, is one of the last intact mill villages in North Carolina, according to the Charlotte Observer.The cotton yarn manufacturer was one of many textile mills that reshaped the Carolinas during the industrialization of the early 20th century.More than 60 acres of the property are up for grabs in two separate sales, Mariette Gagne, agent and owner of MarketPlace Realty, told The Post.

One listing advertises 28 acres priced at $1.15 million, while another offers 43 acres, in two parcels, for $800,000.Henry River Mill Village earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. The opening shots of the 2012 movie, filmed on the property, depict Everdeen and her community struggling to survive.Set in the Appalachian region of a post-apocalyptic United States, District 12 was depicted by series author Suzanne Collins as the smallest and poorest of 12 districts. Since the 2012 film, the village has hosted visitors from around the world, one of the owners told the Charlotte Observer.
