Rory McIlroy cruises to $4.5 million Players Championship win as JJ Spaun implodes in playoff

Rory McIlroy was ready for the moment — JJ Spaun was not.McIlroy cruised to a playoff win at The Players Championship on Monday morning in 30 MPH winds at TPC Sawgrass, earning a $4.5 million payout.McIlroy crushed a driver on the par-5 16th to open the three-hole aggregate showdown — and was able to turn that into a two-putt birdie.Spaun made par after failing to get up-and-down from a greenside bunker and then lost the tournament when he fired his 9-iron right over the island green and into the water.Spaun would go on to make a triple-bogey, which made the bogeys that McIlroy made on 17 and 18 irrelevant.It is the second win for McIlroy this season as he previously cruised to a victory at Pebble Beach in early February.
