Mets face Alexander Canario decision with no room on roster for red-hot outfielder

HOUSTON — The Mets roster is fairly set for Opening Day, and barring something unforeseen, that means they’ll have to make a decision on outfielder Alexander Canario. Since Canario — acquired by the Mets for cash consideration from the Cubs last month in order for Chicago to open up a roster spot for ex-Met Justin Turner — likely wouldn’t pass through waivers, the Mets may look for a trade partner so they don’t lose him for nothing. That shouldn’t be too difficult since Canario had three homers and an OPS of 1.030 and was especially hot at the plate over his final seven Grapefruit League games. The Mets outfield is filled, with newly acquired Juan Soto and Jose Siri joining Brandon Nimmo, and Tyrone Taylor and Starling Marte serving as backups. There had been some expectation that Marte might be traded during the spring, but no partners emerged for the 36-year-old. Soto’s impact on the Mets is already being felt, with the team drawing a record 106,027 fans over 16 Grapefruit League games to Port St.
Lucie this spring. Coupled with last season’s success, crowds at Citi Field will undoubtedly be higher than in recent years. But first, the Mets begin the season with a two-city road trip, starting Thursday in Houston, followed by a three-game series at Miami. It won’t be until their first home series against Toronto begins on April 4 that the Soto effect will really be felt. — Additional reporting by Mike Puma ...
