Brewers star Jackson Chourio has Opening Day to forget with rare platinum sombrero

Hope springs eternal on Opening Day, generally.Jackson Chourio probably hopes he can forget this season opener, though.

The young Brewers star batted leadoff against the Yankees on Thursday afternoon but struck out five times in a brutal 0-for-5 effort during Milwaukee’s 4-2 loss in The Bronx.The five-strikeout game earned him the dubious distinction of completing a platinum sombrero — one past the better-known four-strikeout golden sombrero.According to Cespedes Family BBQ, Chourio joins rare Opening Day ignominy as just the second player ever to strike out five times in a nine-inning game in the season opener.

Max Muncy did the same for the Dodgers in 2023.Chourio started off the game with a three-pitch punchout against Yankees starter Carlos Rodón, who then recorded two more strikeouts against the outfielder.It was Chourio’s final at-bat of the game, though, that proved most costly, as the Brewers put new Yankees closer — and ex-Milwaukee teammate — Devin Williams on the ropes in the ninth inning.With a run already in and runners on second and third with one out in the last frame, Chourio worked the count full but struck out on eight pitches on a nasty “airbender” changeup.

One batter later, Christian Yelich whiffed to end the game and give the Yankees a 4-2 win.It was an inauspicious start to the year for the 21-year-old after he dazzled in his rookie season with 21 homers and a .791 OPS as the Brewers won the NL Central title....
