No more “All’s Wells that ends Wells.”Dave Sims didn’t have to wait long to unveil his first home run call as the Yankees’ radio broadcaster.Sims, the former Mariners TV broadcaster, is the full-time replacement for the retired John Sterling.Sterling was semi-retired last season but was behind the microphone for the postseason run. It’s Sims’ job now, and Austin Wells welcomed him by becoming the first Yankee in franchise history to hit a leadoff home run on Opening Day at the start of a 4-2 victory against the Brewers. “Line drive, going back, reaching up and it is gone!” Sims said as the action unfolded in front of his eyes at Yankee Stadium.
“A home run for Austin Wells and what a start to the 2025 season for the New York Yankees.Hey now!”Sims used “Hey now!” when the Mariners homered. Sterling became legendary for his personalized — and often corny — home run calls that were a play on words for a player’s first name, surname or background. The most important part of the job, however, is that Sims accurately described what was happening before the ball left the yard.
That had become a challenge for Sterling, who had trouble tracking deep fly balls in recent years and sometimes called fly outs as home runs and vice versa.Sims closed out the win by saying, “Victory for the New York Yankees.”Not the same as Sterling’s signature, “The Yankees win.Theeeee Yankeeeees win.”But well-received by Yankees fans nonetheless. ...
