A Florida bus driver fatally shot two passengers during an early-hours ride — even though drivers are banned from being armed, authorities said.The unidentified Metrobus driver opened fire when a fight broke out about someone bringing a bicycle on the bus just before 3 a.m.Sunday in Miami Gardens, sources told the Miami Herald.It was not immediately clear if the shot passengers — neither of whom have been publicly identified — were both involved in the fight, the paper said.
Both were rushed to a nearby hospital but could not be saved.“I was just coming from the store.I heard six shots,” a local identifying himself as Wave God told WSVN.Guilleume Lageur, who works near where the bus stopped, said he heard “an argument” and then “the gun bust.”“I never knew bus drivers could ride with a gun,” said Lageur.In fact, the driver — who was detained but not immediately charged– was not allowed to be armed, officials stressed.“Transit operators are not allowed to be armed,” Juan Mendieta, a spokesperson for Miami-Dade’s Department of Transportation and Public Works, told the Miami Herald.The driver, who was also not publicly identified, had not been charged by Sunday afternoon, the Herald noted.The county’s transit union called it “a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved.”“We are devastated by the tragic events that unfolded in Miami Gardens and extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives,” the Transport Workers Union Local 291 said in a statement.“The safety of both our operators and the riding public is and always will be our highest priority.”...
