Convicted murderer on run for months spotted during Tijuana shootout that killed top Mexican cop

A convicted killer who’s been on the run since early December was recently spotted south of the border in Tijuana, where he was allegedly involved in a shootout that left a top Mexican cop dead.César Moisés Hernández, who was convicted of a 2019 murder in Los Angeles, hadn’t been seen since Dec.4, 2024, when he fled a prison van transporting him to a hearing at Kern County Superior Court in Delano.But on Wednesday, the 34-year-old turned up again in Tijuana, where an elite team of police officers had tracked him to.The US fugitive is alleged to have killed Baja California Officer Abigail Esparza Reyes, Mexican news outlets have confirmed.The female officer was a member of the “Gringo Hunters,” who specialized in returning American fugitives to the US.Officials said she was killed trying to arrest Hernández.CCTV footage within the vicinity of the shooting captured a shirtless Hernández fleeing the scene and ducking into a covered vehicle.He emerged wearing different clothing, and was filmed walking away calmly.Hernández was serving a life sentence at North Kern State Prison when he vanished from the van during the three-hour transport.“Abigail’s life will be honored and her death will not go unpunished,” the department said of the fallen officer.There’s a $30,000 reward being offered for information leading to Hernández’s capture.The US Marshalls Service is working with Mexican authorities to track down Hernández, who remained on the run as of Saturday evening....
