A British man desperate to replace his stolen car said he did just that — by unwittingly buying it back.Ewan Valentine, 36, of Solihull, England, is now hoping his insurance company can make good on the boneheaded blunder that left him without his beloved wheels and lighter in the wallet.Valentine shelled out $26,000 for a souped-up black 2016 Honda Civic Type-R in February to replace the same model that had been pinched from his overnight parking spot, he said on Instagram.“I decided to buy something as close to my stolen one as possible,” he said in the post.Valentine said he saw the identical model in an ad and checked the VIN number, which was different than the one on his stolen wheels, so he wasn’t suspicious at first.Then the deja vu hit.“I started to notice some odd things when I got it home,” Valentine wrote.“I noticed a tent peg and some Christmas tree pines in the boot.
I noticed the locking wheel nut was in a Tesco sandwich bag.I noticed some wrappers in the central storage section.“All oddly similar to my stolen car,” he said.He checked the satellite navigation system on his “new” car and realized that his address and his parents’ address was listed, and that his phone immediately connected to the Bluetooth device.
The clincher came when Valentine took the car to the local Honda dealer, where he tried the key from his old car and it worked on his new purchase.Finally, the dealership plugged in and found the car’s original VIN — and it was Valentine’s.“There was a surreal moment in Honda’s car park,” he said.
